In Matthew 18:21–35, Jesus reminds us that forgiveness is not a transaction but a transformation. Peter wants a number, seven chances, seven mercies, but Jesus offers a way of life shaped by grace that never runs out. The parable of the unforgiving servant exposes how easily we forget the mercy we ourselves have received. When we cling to resentment, we imprison our own hearts; when we forgive, we step back into the freedom God has already given us. Forgiveness doesn’t deny the wound it refuses to let the wound define the future.
