After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sends the disciples ahead while he retreats to pray. By evening, the boat is far from land, battered by wind and waves. It’s a striking image: the disciples still caught in forces beyond their control.
Jesus comes. Not after the storm has passed, not once the waters are safe, but in the middle of it, walking toward them on the waves. The disciples don’t recognize him at first; fear distorts their vision. Peter’s moment is deeply human. He steps out of the boat with courage, responding to Jesus’ invitation, “Come.”
This passage reminds us that storms are not signs of God’s absence. They are often the very places where Christ draws near. Faith may falter, but Jesus’ grasp does not. And sometimes the most courageous act is simply calling out, “Lord, save me,” trusting that the hand reaching toward us is already there.
