Sunday Preview: Trust in Discipleship

posted in: Save the Date | 0

Jesus looks at the crowds and names something we recognize all too well: the human tendency to resist grace no matter how it comes. John arrives with discipline and intensity, and people say he is too severe. Jesus arrives with table fellowship and joy, and people say he is too giving. It is as if the generation He addresses cannot be satisfied, cannot be reached, cannot be moved. Jesus does not respond with frustration. He responds with invitation.

Then Jesus turns from the crowds to the Father in prayer, rejoicing that God’s wisdom is revealed not to the self-assured but to the humble, the open, the weary. The ones who know they need help. The ones who are tired of carrying burdens alone.

Then comes one of the most tender promises in all of Scripture: Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
