Matthew 9:35–10:8 paints a tender picture of Jesus’ ministry and the bold commissioning that follows. Jesus moves through towns and villages teaching, healing, and proclaiming good news, and when he sees the crowds scared and hurting, “like sheep without a shepherd”. His response is compassion that becomes a call. The harvest is abundant, he tells the disciples, and now they are to step into that work: to go, to heal, to raise, to cleanse, to cast out fear and darkness, to embody the nearness of God’s kingdom. What begins in Jesus’ own heart, mercy that refuses to look away, becomes a shared vocation.
