In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist also has a question: Are you the one who is to come, or should we wait for another? To ask this is to claim that nothing is greater than “the one who is to come,” because this One is the answer to every question and the cure for every wrong. John wonders: What have I done with my life? How long until God makes all things new? As with his parables, Jesus responds with vivid images and an invitation to look closely: the blind see, the lame walk, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor receive good news. In other words, the answer is all around you, not in simple claims of identity or power, but in the journey of healing, life, and justice that appear wherever love reigns.
