John 12:1-8 recounts a moment in Bethany, six days before Passover, where Jesus visits the home of Lazarus, whom He had recently raised from the dead. During this time, Mary the sister of Lazarus, anoints Jesus’ feet with costly perfume made of pure nard and wipes His feet with her hair.
At the same time, Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’ disciples, objects to this act arguing that the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor. However, his protest is insincere, as he is described as a thief. Jesus defends Mary, emphasizing the significance of her act as preparation for His burial and highlighting that the opportunity to care for the poor will always be present, but Jesus’ physical presence is fleeting.
