In the scripture for this Sunday, Peter was encountered the power of God that called directly to him. That power and mission would result in a large “catch of fish,” as the stories about the growth of the church confirm. There are scenes of this text that unfold in three dimensions of discipleship: (1) the recognition of the power of Jesus, (2) the response of confession, and (3) the assurance of mission and success by following God’s word.
Jesus is not interested in doing things simply for the purpose of amazing people. He is in the proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The time has come to shift from only teaching to crowds who go home, to also teaching to disciples who will follow.
