At the wedding in Cana, the interaction between Jesus and his mother offers a glimpse into their intimate relationship. When Mary informs Jesus that the wine has run out, he responds by suggesting that someone else should handle the situation. Jesus seems to think the timing is off, addressing his mother formally: “Woman, what concern is that to you or me? My time has not yet come.”
However, Mary knows better. Instead of reacting to his tone, she turns to the servants and instructs them, “Do whatever he tells you.” Mary understood the timing better than Jesus anticipated. She was the one who brought him into the world, watched him grow, dried his tears as a child, and followed him into adulthood. Mary knew this moment marked the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. It was no ordinary time.
