As Jesus spoke to his disciples, they appeared confused by his talk of his impending death and the true meaning of greatness. It seems they were arguing as they walked from one town to another, and Jesus was taken aback by their debate.
Thus, Jesus asks, “What was the subject of your argument on the road?” They fall silent, ashamed to confess that they had been disputing over who among them was the greatest. It’s possible they were trying to see who had spent the most time with Jesus or who had witnessed the most remarkable miracle.
Jesus’ response, “Whoever wants to be first – that is, greatest – must be last and be a servant to all.”
Join us on Sunday as we travel through the Gospel message from Mark focusing on Jesus’ definition of what it means to be the greatest.
