Who is my neighbor?” How much love are we talking here, Jesus? Can you be specific? Where can we draw the line? Outside our front door? At the edges of our neighborhood?
The lawyer in our Gospel text today wanted Jesus’ acceptance and approval. He wanted to stand out from the crowd in Jesus’ estimation. What he needs to learn, and so do we, is that entering the kingdom of God and inheriting eternal life means a wholehearted, single-minded devotion to God that overflows from our hearts, minds, souls, and strength in practical, loving deeds done on behalf of our fellow human beings.
