She is a woman with a secret she is ashamed of. Her secret isolates her from the community. In relation to the man sitting by the well, she is a “three strikes you’re out” person. She is a Samaritan, hated by Jews; she is a woman looked down on by everyone.
She comes at high noon. In the light of day, John is signaling us, saying, Get your hopes up, reader! This encounter between a woman with a shameful secret and the Messiah at the well offers a chance for her life to forever be transformed through living water.
