I was elected the Rector of St. Bartholomew’s in the last century, 1984. I have served for a quarter of a century. I remember a member of the Search Committee when I was interviewing for the position, who was also on the Vestry, asking me what one quality do I have to offer? I said, patience. Patience, how should I define that? Maybe I should say endurance but I think it is best defined by the prayer from our Book of Common Prayer that I recite at the beginning of our Vestry meetings. “O God of peace, who has taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence we will find our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Knowing that God is God and we are not is patience.
One advantage of serving for a quarter of a century is that you see children grow and you preside at their marriages. One disadvantage is that you see beloved ones die and you bury them, including the Vestryman who asked me that question. Well, maybe that’s not a disadvantage, it was my privilege to do so. I loved him.
